thanks for dropping in!
Hi! My name is Niall.
I’m a novelist, poet and English teacher. I’m originally from Kilkenny but now I live and work in South East London. On this site you’ll find news about my debut novel, ‘Line’ and my forthcoming ‘Choose Your Own Poetry Adventure’ called ‘The Erection Specialists’, other publications, links to resources to help emerging writers, contact details, and my blog – where I post about reading, writing and education.
After wanting to write for a long time, but not doing much about it, I enrolled part-time in Goldsmiths University’s Teacher/Writer MA. I graduated, with distinction in 2015, and then set myself a goal of having a poetry collection, a short story collection and a novel published within the next five years.
I didn’t quite meet that goal, but my work has now been published widely in both the U.K and Ireland. My stories have won numerous awards, including winning both a New Irish Writing award and the Michael McLaverty award, and twice been listed for The Costa Short Story award as well as the The Tom-Gallon Trust award and The Fitzcarraldo Novel Prize.
In 2017 I was selected to take part in Poetry Ireland’s Introductions series, and in 2018 I published my debut poetry collection, ‘Did You Put The Weasels Out?’, which was longlisted as a Poetry School’s book of the year.
In 2019 I signed with Storyline Literary Agency.
In 2021 the English Arts Council England awarded me a National Lottery grant to work on a ‘Choose Your Own’ Poetry adventure – called ‘The Erection Specialists’. which is now complete and will be published by Broken Sleep Books in Spring 2022.
When I’m not writing, I’m teaching English in a comprehensive secondary school in Bermondsey or spending time with my family in the brilliant South London suburb of Brockley.
